Dismal scores for reading and writing in NAPLAN among year 9 boys is a distant memory at Ashfield Boys High School where a tightly focused, individualised program has resulted in students who rack up more than 1 million words a year.
The program has resulted in the school elevating its NAPLAN results from just 10.7 per cent of year 9 students achieving in the top two bands in 2017, to 32.2 per cent this year.

Community support program connecting generations
They may be generations apart, but a program in Sydney's Inner West is helping to connect people from the community.
It brings together people who need assistance with their grocery shopping and high school students who volunteer their time to help - and the students benefit just as much as the clients do.
