Mathematics

The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10. 

By studying mathematics, students learn to work mathematically – developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and communication skills.

The syllabus consists of the following strands:

  • number and algebra
  • measurement and geometry
  • statistics and probability.

In Year 11 and 12, the study of mathematics is optional. Courses offered include:

  • Mathematics Extension 2 (Year 12 only)
  • Mathematics Extension 1
  • Mathematics Advanced
  • Mathematics Standard 2
  • Mathematics Standard 1 (Optional HSC examination)
  • Mathematics Life Skills.

Achievements in mathematics and computing

Ashfield Boys High school mathematics students achieved the following results in the 2016 mathematics examinations. 13% of the students in mathematics general pathway 2 scored bands 5 and 6 in mathematics, 60% of the students scored either band 5 or band 6, and 80% of students in extension 1 mathematics scored either band E3 or band E4, and in mathematics extension 2 all students scored a notional band 5 or 6.   

In the computing course software design and development, 43% of students scored a band 5. Of particular note, this percentage is double the state average for this course.

Mathematics

Mathematics provides students with knowledge, skills, and understanding in number and algebra, measurement and geometry, statistics and probability.

At Ashfield Boys High school our focus is on developing communication, logical reasoning, analytical and critical thinking, and problem-solving skills through inquiry and active participation in a challenging and engaging learning environment.

Working out

Mathematics is not just about getting the correct answer.

Mathematics is a form of communication, in which you use words, numbers, symbols, and drawings to communicate your thoughts. Unfortunately, the marker can't see what you were thinking or what you did on your calculator unless you write it down.

Good thoughts and good communication can score good marks, especially if your answer is incorrect but your working is sound.

Showing working will also be helpful for you when you are checking your work under time pressure at the end of the assessment.
