Creative arts

In creative arts, students discover a variety of art forms through a study of dance, drama, music and visual arts.

Studying the creative arts, students learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make and perform. Each art form has its own unique knowledge and skills, elements or concepts as well as a capacity to inspire and enrich lives.

Students must study 100 hours of both music and visual arts during Years 7 to 10. They also have an opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills in other art forms through elective subjects including drama, dance, photography and visual design. Students can then select from a range of courses in Years 11 to 12.

Arts

Students can unleash their creative flair through dance and drama performances, competitions, exhibitions and enrichment programs.

Students with particular interests and talents can participate in local and state-wide activities in visual arts, music, dance, and drama.

Music and Band Program

The music program seeks to develop skills in all students by providing experience in performance, composition and musical appreciation.

Years 7 and 8 deal with basic theory, improvisation, learning keyboard, guitar, and drums plus solo and ensemble performances. Elective music and music technology courses provide more advanced studies in performance and composition, recording and listening skills.

School band

The school band program continues to grow in popularity and students are learning to play a variety of instruments. They are currently provided with learning experiences in a number of different ensembles:

  • Concert band
  • Stage band
  • Junior band
  • Vocal group

We are fortunate in having our instrumental staff who are practicing musicians who are also experienced teachers.

Drama

Ashfield is committed to a developmental drama program for all year 7 students. The course is designed to program for all year 7 students. The course is designed to promote learning about self and society through performance and reflection.

The course generates opportunities for the development of self-confidence, empathy, providing self-discipline and interactive communication. It also provides the foundation for students who choose to continue their drama studies at school. Drama is an important facet of student self-development. It is also lots of fun and allows for creative interpretation from our students.

  • Elective drama is offered in stage 5 (Years 9 and 10).
  • Students may also choose to study the challenging and rewarding HSC drama course.
  • Extra-curricular drama.
  • Theatre sports workshops/competition.
  • Year 8 Drama Ensemble for skilled and interested students who show an aptitude for drama in year 7 classes. Students gain entry to this ensemble by drama teacher nomination.

Visual arts

As well as the traditional visual arts classes from years 7-12, we also offer:

Graphic design – this course provides specialized learning opportunities for students to explore the nature of digital media and design as an important field of artistic practice.

Performance opportunity

We like to provide occasions where the students can present their work to our community for support and encouragement of their talents.
